Luckily this never happens to me, maybe it’s being Australian but there’s never been that sort of “Girls like this? No way,” attitude. (I was a member of a Star Wars association group for years and there were an equal amount of us “Girls” as well as Guys.)
With the comic reading…I don’t know. Maybe it’s because we’re in Oceania and we’ve always had easy access to Manga and Anime, as well as being very culturally diverse, that my generation in particular never batted an eye of equality issues with comic reading.
Think about it. Most of the shows we watched back in the nineties were very “boyish” there were no Angelina Ballerina back in my day, the closest thing was probably Sailor Moon…which was originally a manga comic book!
(Not to mention we were surrounded by Batman, TAS as well as the movies, Superman was in both Lois and Clark as well as his own cartoon series and later Smallville.)
Dragonball was insanely popular (and is still my favourite,) hell even The Simpsons have their own run of comic books. There shouldn’t be this level of shock now days if women like comics, both sexes have grown up being influenced by these characters in pop culture all our lives.
